Mindfulness and compassion for well-being

photo of a bird flying in he sky

"Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally." - Jon Kabatt-Zinn

Kabatt-Zinn also refers to mindfulness as heartfulness, so it is about both mind and body. Mindfulness is a simple way of relating to our experience in the present moment, usually through short guided meditations. Regular mindfulness meditation can help to support well being and develop a sense of ease. Basically, mindfulness can help us to take care of ourselves.

Clinical research shows that regularly practicing mindfulness can help to:

  • lower stress

  • reduce anxiety

  • manage recurrent depression

  • improve resilience

  • improve overall emotional well-being

The metaphor of a bird suggests that both wings of clear-sighted wisdom and compassion are needed. There is also growing evidence supporting the use of compassionate practices.  In particular, individuals who experience high levels of self criticism or shame can find exploring and developing compassion can be very helpful.

If you are interested in mindfulness and compassion, it can be incorporated into therapy sessions as appropriate. This would usually include gradually building up to doing some practices at home as well as during sessions.
